Single Wooden SwingI want to swing a car on one of the trees in my yard. As far as I can remember, the thickness recommended (diameter) is 8 inches, but then when you are drilling holes in the branch to install the swing. I have no intention of drilling, but rather the knotting of the rope around the branch instead - what width would you recommend? I would leave the DIY approach and err on the safe side by having SwingsRus build a steel beams welded firmly pressed into the concrete foundation. They also have a wide choice of seats, a wood toilet seat is especially comfortable to wear! It really depends on the weight to be attached to it. Personally, I've never used anything less than six inches in diameter. Remember to slide the rope through a length of pipe that goes around the branch - to avoid damaging the tree. So leave a little slack around the branch where you tie it so that the branch has room to grow, otherwise you'll have to climb up there from time to time to remove the rope. While it is too tight, it could girdle the branch and damage the tree. It depends on the species of the tree, swing and how to weigh the occupant, and proximity to the tree trunk you attach the swing. A sound eight-inch branch on most trees will hold an adult if you do not hang the swing too far on it. . Posted on June 21, 2010.
