Propane Tank Sizes Then a gas grill or propane tank similar in size be used temporarily in place of a regular external tank? We had a reservoir of 57 gallons of propane out of the house which was used for a gas stove only. We only went through about 20 gallons of propane per year. The reservoir (with a half tank of gas) has been recently stolen. Is it possible to connect a gas grill or propane tank similar in size instead of the largest tank that was there? We sell the house and will not stay there long term so it seems unnecessary to go through the hassle of having another full tank size of the facility and pay for a tank of gas. Propane only that we use is the cooktop in the kitchen. We have two 20 pound tanks connected to it. It is in service and one is a spare part. We use a tank about every six months. It worked very well for us because we built the house 12 years ago. Yes, with a regulator, no problem. It should be fine if that's all you use. Posted on May 31, 2010.
