I have a Brinkmann smoker with my only option is to let air in. Is it better to leave the door open to allow the fire Proped receive .. air or is it better to close the door to contain as much heat as possible.

Take another look at that there must have vents on the bottom to let air in. A smoker is designed to smoke instead of a hot fire. Until the fire burns, it should be OK. If you are cooking and smoking, you may need extra ventilation through the door.
