Ask most people to the question "Who invented light bulbs? and you're likely to get the answer "Thomas Edison". While the issue could be considered a little ambiguous, you can get a tick or a cross depending on the point of view to ask questions.

It was Humphrey Davy, English chemist who first attached to a battery and son passed an electric current through a piece of carbon to create the first arc lamp back in 1809. It was not until 1973 that Ed Hammer and General Electric came up with the design of compact fluorescent lamp, or light bulb as we know it today. At the time, it was considered too expensive to set up the production of low-watt bulbs and design plans have been shelved. Later the design plans were finally filtered and copied by others.

The energy saving capacity of light bulbs light output is due to their use of gas instead filament as the conduct of electric charge. Fluorescent lamps in the industry such as factories and offices have benefited from these savings for years. The percentage of electricity consumption in the average household in the United States amounts to 9% of the total consumption of each household. Use energy saving lightbulbs could reduce this by 7% to 2% only. Not only does this put on efficiency, the amount of carbon emissions reduced would have a very positive effect on global warming.

There are some negatives with low power light bulbs. They contain a very small amount of mercury that has an effect on the elimination when they are used. The environmental impact of failures is also a slight risk that the broken bulbs release small amounts of mercury vapor. None of these major problems and advantages of this type of lighting far out the risks.

Another set of lights that follow the same compact design are metal halide lamps. Halide lamps are part of the group of high family or HID lamps, high intensity discharge. Mainly used in industrial settings these lamps use a high-pressure mix of argon, mercury and different combinations of metal halide lamps to create a variety of specialized lighting effects. In most cases, the metal halide lamps have been used in environments outside lighting, street lighting and parking. The effect of high intensity are best suited to meet, directional lighting.

In conclusion, the fixtures have come a long way since the days of Davy and Edison and the future is destined to be one of evolving technologies, we strive to become more efficient in our use of electricity . Using the cartoon light bulb above his head to simulate the breaking of a new idea is ironic that we look to the future for ways to conserve our energy resources.
